Chapter Eight

Ginger set the table, using place mats, while Mac fixed their plates. When they sat down to eat, she was hit with the sensation that this really wasn’t happening. But it was happening. She was having supper with her ex-husband, barely a week after he’d shown up unexpectedly at the faculty meeting. And they were eating food prepared by his mother, her worst critic.

What frightened Ginger was her own glow of happiness.

“Well. How is it?” Mac prompted, looking as eager and slightly anxious as one of her high-school students might have looked, turning in a project. She shrugged aside apprehension, reminding herself that she was twenty-nine now, not nineteen, and not likely to lose sight of reality.

“Delicious.” Ginger chewed her bite of succulent roast beef, savoring the taste. “Mary’s a wonderful cook.”

“She’s had lots of practice,” Mac replied, forking a bite into his mouth. He’d made the sandwiches open faced, spooning on gravy, so they were using forks. Knives weren’t necessary because the meat was so tender.

“So has my mother, and it didn’t do her a lot of good. Your mother’s just talented in the kitchen.”

“I’ll tell her you said so.”

“I’m sure she’ll be flattered no end with a compliment from me. She may not give you any more leftovers when she finds out you shared these with her exdaughter-in-law.”

“That’s a punishment I can live with. Food’s not nearly so important to me as it once was.”

“He said as he took a big mouthful.” Ginger couldn’t resist teasing him. “You should have seen the relief on your face when I excused you from eating a tuna-fish sandwich. You were like a man given a pardon.”

He grinned, reaching over to wipe the corner of her mouth with his paper napkin. “You were pretty quick yourself to put that tiny can of tuna back on the shelf.”

“I make a lousy tuna salad. I haven’t improved my culinary skills in general,” she added.

“That’s okay. Out of necessity I’ve turned into a pretty fair cook,” he stated. “I make a mean pot of red beans and a tasty jambalaya.”

How did his learning to cook make it “okay” that she hadn’t? Ginger decided not to ask that question. “I’m impressed. Barry’s a gourmet cook. But I believe I already told you that.” It seemed necessary to bring up Barry’s name and wreck the harmony. “Yes, you did.”

“He serves me delicious meals, and I serve him restaurant food when he occasionally comes here for lunch or dinner. So in his case he won’t have any false expectations if we should eventually marry.”

“The same would be true of you and me,” Mac countered.

“Except there’s no chance we’ll remarry.”

“I disagree, but let’s not argue while we eat. Or talk about Whitfield. Do you mind?”

The request was so mild and reasonable Ginger could only comply. “What is there for us to talk about that isn’t a sensitive subject?”

“Lots of things. I wondered if you have a kid named James Carlson in one of your classes.”

“In my first-period class. So far he hasn’t turned in a single assignment, but he isn’t a discipline problem.
